I'm a self taught thereminist who enjoys playing the theremin in a classical style, but I enjoy other genres.
The short improvisation you heared while entering this site was played by me on the Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin.
I recently attended a thereminworkshop given by Pamelia Kurstin, which was hosted by Moog Music at their plant in Asheville North Carolina. At left, I'm seen here playing a Moog Etherwave Standard theremin at the Moog Music plant on March 10th, 2007.
I'd heared of theremins before, but never knew enough about them untill 2006, while doing a web search on synthesizers for a totally blind friend. While at an online music shop, I noticed theremins for sale. I had no idea these things were still being produced. Out of pure curiosity, I baught one. It took a week to go from sounding like a cat-fight in a sewer pipe, to just being able to play scales. It took another couple of months to play recognizable tunes. But, within less than a year, I'm now able to play with a high degreee of accuracy, and expression.
In 2004, I started singing first tenor with the Jackson Choral Society. At right, I'm seen here singing with the Jackson Choral Society in 2006 at the First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
I've performed with the Magnolia Chorus, Jackson chaptor of Society for Preservation, and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (S P E B S Q S A), as well as the Mississippi Opera Chorus sinse the mid 1980s.
I studied music at Hinds Junior (community) College in 1986.
In the late 70s, I performed with the Biloxi Opera Theater untill the early 80s.
In the early 1970s, I started playing the violin at the age of 8, and the flute at about 12 years of age.
I hated the drum because it only played one note all the time, over, and over again.
In the late 1980s, I started learning how to make holograms. In 1991 I attended a two week workshop in holographic imaging at Lake Forest University in Chicago. I have performed holographic demonstrations at St Andrews School, as well as the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, Mississippi. I made holograms up untill the late 1990s, when Agfa Gevart, the supplier of holographic films stopped production of the films needed for use with red lasers. My company at that time was Parallax Holograms.
At the left, you can see me demonstrating holography in my lab. Click on the image to watch.
The holography demo was part of a public access television program which was shot in 1996. The tape was lost for ten years, and was found by me in 2007 while unpacking some old moving boxes. The years have not been kind to the video tape, evin though it had only been run once. I thaught the tape had been stolen in a burglary. Fortunately, it's now available for everyone to learn about holography from.

The theremin lesson videos are not a substitute for professional "how to play" videos, books, or in-person workshops, and instruction. They are intended as an introductory level guide to help develop a basic understanding of how the theremin is played.
